From Firefighting, to HAZWOPER, to technical rescue, to medical responder, NFPA standards and OSHA regulations clearly state ERT members must be trained commensurate with those duties and functions they are expected to perform. We will only be able to scratch the surface since there are a multitude of complex details, however, we will focus on these three major points with relevant examples. But with nearly 15 years of industrial response training experience, I have found there are three key pitfalls to avoid in keeping your ERT program compliant. Many ERT leaders believe they know what a successful emergency response team should look like. Many ERT qualifications overlap with other discipline requirements, which in turn, can be an overwhelming burden for team leaders tracking multiple fire, rescue, hazmat, and medical response disciplines and their associated training requirements. Achieving compliance with these requirements can be extremely frustrating at times, especially while constantly chasing expired training qualifications required by OSHA and NFPA.
